IN CHARACTER
Name: Ultra Magnus / Minimus Ambus
Canon: Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye (IDW continuity)
Canon Point: End of Issue 53, post upgrade to 'Maximus Ambus' but before the final battle
Age: No age is given, but since the Autobot Decepticon war lasted millions of years, he's probably a little older than that.
History: Ultra Magnus, was once the Duly Appointed Enforcer of the Tyrest Accord, which is a set of rules and regulations governing the control of Transformer technology. It forbids the passing of Cybertronian technology to alien species. He also enforces the Code of Interplanetary Conflict; a set of rules created by the warring factions of the Autubots and Decepticons as well as several other alien races. The Code serves as a rulebook to the millennia spanning war between the two Cybertronian factions. Due to all of this, Ultra Magnus is seen as a universal lawman. A soldier with an unparalleled sense of justice and an unwavering desire to adhere to the codes and tenets that define his position. For millions of years, throughout the Great War between Autobots and Decepticons, Ultra Magnus has been seen participating in some of the most brutal and suicidal campaigns imaginable. He has been seen taking incredible amounts of damage, battle wounds that no other bot should be capable of recovering from, and yet he always, almost magically, pulled through to fight another day. Ultra Magnus is a legend among legends.

Which is why 'Ultra Magnus, Duly Appointed Enforcer of the Tyrest Accord' is a title. A name meant to carry on the legacy of a great lawman and soldier. Like all sentient life, even a Transformer's will run its course. When the original Ultra Magnus passed on, Chief Justice Tyrest sought to keep the legend alive. He prepared a story that Magnus had faked his death, then forged a suit of armor in the soldier's own image. From that point forward, the title and form of 'Ultra Magnus' had been passed down multiple times throughout the history of the Great War by Tyrest to those he deemed worthy. Currently, the armor and the title belong to Minimus Ambus; a diminutive Autobot with the dream of living up to the original Ultra Magnus. His ambition and his drive are what led to Tyrest ultimately selecting him as the current iteration of Ultra Magnus, and since then, he has patrolled the galaxy thwarting crimes and fighting the good fight.

In his adventures during the war, Ultra Magnus spent some time on Earth, which had been caught up in the war. In his comings and goings from Earth to their home planet of Cybertron, Ultra Magnus came to know a human runaway by the name of Verity Carlo, who had stowed away on his ship. Verity's companionship showed that the harsh lawman did indeed have a softer side, and she affectionately dubbed him 'Uncle Magnus.'

Once the Great War came to a close and it appeared that Megatron, leader of the Decepticons, had finally been defeated, Magnus and the rest of the Autobots returned to Cybertron to sort through the wreckage, so to speak. With the remaining Decepticons penned in a singular internment camp and non-affiliated Cybertronians returning to their war-torn world in droves, Magnus decided to join the crew of the Lost Light, which was under the command of fellow Autobot and continuous pain in the chassis, Rodimus. Rodimus was about to embark on an EPIC (read: stupid) QUEST to find the legendary Knights of Cybertron. His belief (read: delusion) was that finding the fabled Knights of Cybertron would help restore peace to the disgruntled citizens of Cybertron by helping them to remember 'the old ways' (read: I'm bored time for ADVENTURE). Ultra Magnus (reluctantly) joined up as his second-in-command, and it was literally the worst choice he could have ever made. Let's find out why:

The crew of the Lost Light is basically about 200 of the most annoying, deranged, usually homicidal bots that had nothing better to do than to play 'Hot Potato' with live grenades aboard a ship hurtling through the infinite vacuum of space. They drink unabashedly, they swear, fight, drink some more, have sanctions levied against them, drink a little more, and basically spend every moment they aren't hooked up to a recharge slab making Ultra Magnus question his reason for remaining functional. It's a massive ship of toddlers and Magnus is the very grumpy babysitter.

Their adventures so far: The ship actually exploded when leaving Cybertron, quantum jumping them to a random point in space. They didn't even break the atmosphere and bots were already exploding, dying, or being terminally phase-shifted into walls, instantly killing them. Almost immediately after that, a sparkeater (a ravenous beast that loves devouring the sparks, or hearts, of Cybertronians) was found stowed away in the lower levels of the ship where Magnus watched Rodimus use another crew member as bait to lure it out to kill it. Then, to make matters worse, a swarm of nanocons (microscopic robots that tear you apart from the inside) were reactivated inside Ultra Magnus. Rodimus and several others had to be shrunk down like an overused sci-fi trope and go inside of him to battle them off. When it was discovered that the source of the infestation was coming from the pistons in his mouth that were rusted from perpetually frowning, it was revealed that the only way Magnus could save himself was to smile.

It was the worst day in the history of forever.

Whirl, one of the crew members that decided to go with Rodimus to battle the nanocons left graffiti inside of him. I couldn't make that up on my best day.

Anyway, from that point on, it was business as usual, with the crew getting up to their usual shenanigans and Magnus repeatedly smashing his head on his desk in an attempt to stave off the urge to jettison them all out of the airlock. They stumbled through their quest, following leads as far as they could, but their greatest ordeals would prove to come from the Lost Light itself. Rodimus held a secret that he hadn't told most of the crew, including his second in command; that they were also ferrying an imprisoned Overlord, one of the most powerful, sadistic, and outright terrifying Decepticons ever as part of a deal Rodimus had made with fellow Autobot Prowl. Their aim was to see if they could figure out how such a powerful Decepticon was made, in hopes that they could replicate the process for the Autobots. That plan didn't work out so well when Overlord escaped. Ultra Magnus led the charge, only to be impaled through the spark. After Overlord was subdued, Ratchet, the ship's chief medical officer, surmised that Ultra Magnus would be dead within ten days. However, in his nearly comatose state, Minimus (while still inside the armor) triggered a failsafe that teleported himself to Luna 1, one of Cybertron's moons, and to Chief Justice Tyrest's location. There, Tyrest had his physician Pharma use his state of the art tech to save Magnus' life. But while Magnus was undergoing repairs, Tyrest took the opportunity to go through Magnus' reports from the Lost Light. Becoming enraged that Magnus had been reduced to nothing more than a bureaucratic joke in this time of peace, he stripped Minimus Ambus of his title and armor as Ultra Magnus. Rodimus and a contingent of Autobots traced Magnus to Luna 1, where they were not only arrested for harboring a criminal, but also discovered that Minimus was Ultra Magnus all along. Tyrest, who meanwhile had become quite mad with religious fanaticism, was working with Pharma on a device that was going to wipe out half of the Cybertronians in the universe. Needless to say, Rodimus, Minimus, and their company of jerkwads managed to save the day, though not before Rodimus and Magnus had a bit of a spark to spark. Magnus confessed to not second guessing Rodimus' leadership capabilities, and Rodimus confessed to bringing Overlord on board. Once Tyrest had been dealt with and his plan foiled (curse those meddling bots) Magnus once again donned his armor, rejoined the crew of the Lost Light, and flew off towards more nonsensical adventures. Though, he had officially relinquished his title as the Duly Appointed Enforcer of the Tyrest Accord, Rodimus saw to it that the position was filled by another Autobot, Fortress Maximus, who left the ship soon after.

Though it was not long until Magnus and the rest of the crew of the Lost Light were forcefully recalled back to Cybertron. In their absence, the Decepticon scientist Shockwave was up to no good, and in fact started to cause some trouble in the neighborhood. He got in one little fight and the Autobots got scared and Magnus and the Crew arrived after resurrecting a lost titan called Metroplex and out kaiju'd the crap out of Shockwave's titan. To summarize as best as I can, Shockwave went totally bananas with powers he'd been growing across the galaxy for about 400 million years, killed the Autobot Bumblebee, and then Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots, and Megatron, former leader of the Decepticons, who had just that moment took up the fallen Bumblebee's badge and switched sized, blasted Shockwave into oblivion. After things calmed down, Megatron agreed to stand trial, but thanks to Starscream's (his former second in command) gigantic mouth, decided that he was going to use a loophole in the Cybertronian justice system to join the crew of the Lost Light to find the Knights of Cybertron so that they themselves could pass judgment upon him. Now Megatron is the 'co-captain' of the Lost Light with Rodimus, which in the grand scheme of things, is going to severely bite everyone in the ass. Let's find out why!

After Optimus Prime assigned Megatron as 'co-captain' of the Lost Light, their next move after take off (without exploding this time) was to find the 'greatest Autobot hero of all time' Thunderclash, who also possessed half of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, and thus also had a map to the Knights of Cybertron and Cyberutopia. What follows is a series of shenanigans including a quantum duplicate of the Lost Light where everyone was horrifically murdered thanks to a Decepticon spy on the crew, said Decepticon spy using a briefcase time machine to go back to the past and try and alter it by killing Megatron when he was being created, an actual holographic planet Earth populated by nothing but sitcom tropes that was formed by one of the crew who was dying in his room and was trying to cry for help, and landing on a planet where every Transformer that has ever been built has plinths dedicated to them, and a field of flowers that inextricably links them to every bot they've murdered either directly or indirectly. Fun place? It's not, and it gets worse later on. Throughout all of this, Magnus continues his duties as Second-in-command to both Megatron and Rodimus. It becomes clear, over time, that Magnus and Megatron seem to get along quite well. Mainly because they're two of the only real, responsible adults on a ship full of toddlers with access to heavy weaponry. However, many on the crew are not exactly as forgiving of Megatron as a few select members of the crew are. Getaway, who had been planning a mutiny since they had left Cybertron the first time, manages to get Megatron and what Getaway deems as his 'fan club' (which includes Rodimus, Ultra Magnus, and several other series main stays) onto Rodimus' ship, the Rodpod, to investigate a mysterious beacon. It isn't long before their ship gets shot down and crashes on, surprisingly, the Necrobot's world. You know, that world I mentioned a few sentences back with the plinths and the flowers? That's the one. It's here that Rodimus and crew make contact with the Lost Light and find out about the mutiny. They also find out who shot them down: The Decepticon Justice Division. A group of psycho murderers and zealots that believe so passionately in Decepticonism, that they brutally torture and murder any Decepticon that goes against its tenets. Megatron, having renounced Decepticonism during his trial, is now at the top of their shit list and they're not exactly fond of Autobots either. Tarn, their leader, teams up with Overlord (previously believed to be dead, but this is comics so death doesn't mean much of anything) and Deathsaurus and his entire army and prepares to lay siege to the Necrobot's compound, where Rodimus, Magnus, Megatron, and crew are holed up. They're given until sunset by Tarn to basically curl into a ball and kiss their afts goodbye, but instead, the small crew of Lost Lighters begin to plan. Minimus, whose armor was damaged when the Rodpod was shut down, is measured for a new suit of Magnus armor, designed by resident mad scientist, Brainstorm. The result: Basically the Hulkbuster of Magnus armors which Brainstorm affectionately dubs 'Maximus Ambus.'

Magnus is very pleased by his new upgrade and prepares to go into what seems like their final battle. But not before sharing a group hug with his comrades, all of which he can basically hug in one shot with his giant, all-encompassing arms.

Personality: Ultra Magnus was and is still considered to be one of the greatest soldiers and lawmen in the galaxy. As such, he is strict to the point of being completely anal, and refuses to even bend the rules, let alone break them. Minor infractions of Tyrest Accord and the Autobot code send him into an almost stammering mess, to the point where his bureaucratic nonsense has become a joke to the crew. He;s neat and tidy to the point where he can be driven off the scene by a crewmate mentioning in passing that they saw someone dragging dirt by his office, and he is detailed to a fault. Case in point, he can tell when a shuttle's rivets are out of line and will actually complain about it.

However, despite his strict, almost comical moral code, Ultra Magnus is potentially the most trustworthy aboard the Lost Light. While most bots have their own plans and agendas, Magnus is seen as always being the full disclosure type. He keeps to his word, upholds his duty with an unerring sense of justice, and when someone takes the time to know him, like Verity did, he can actually be a very caring and compassionate bot. Over all, he truly wants what's best for everyone, and lately has even been noted as overlooking the most minor of infractions in the favor of building bonds with his crew members.

After the Tyrest incident, Ultra Magnus has taken it upon himself to try and 'lighten up.' He still comes down like a hammer upon any infraction to the Tyrest Accord or the Autobot code, but he's more willing to turn a blind optic to some of the crew's more childish and harmless behaviors. Most of all, he still performs his duty as second in command to both Rodimus AND Megatron, despite what the latter has done in the 400 million years of war. He's also gone to splitting up his time as Ultra Magnus and Minimus Ambus when previously he kept his identity a total secret. However, he still has issues when it comes to his spark brother, Dominus Ambus, whom he is not especially close with. In fact, taking on the mantle of Ultra Magnus was his way of crawling out of his brother Dom's shadow.

Contracts: He will be thankful for being picked up from the Necrobot's world though he would be extremely reluctant to leave his friends and comrades behind before such a serious battle. However, when presented with the contract, he will read it thoroughly several times, taking note of any egregious spelling errors, dangling prepositions, and he might actually compliment whoever presents him with the contract on its formatting. Provided it stands up to his scrutiny. He will also request several copies of the contract, in triplicate, for his records. He will sign the contract, however, believing that this is the safest route to get offworld and to find the lost Light once again.
Abilities/Skills: Like pretty much every Transformer, Ultra Magnus has the ability to, wait for it, transform. His alt mode is that of a large truck, with a lengthy trailer. On earth, his alt mode's trailer was that of a truck used to carry other cars. He also has advanced Cybertronian weaponry and, due to the high quality level of his spark, he is able to undergo rigorous augmentation, hence his ability to wear the Magnus armor in the first place. Aside from that, his standard powerset is no different than a soldier or a military officer: he has honed senses (for picking out those pesky rivets) and above average combat capabilities.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Strengths: A literal loadbearer, his spark can withstand a great deal of augmentation, has all manners of laws and by-laws committed to memory including annotations and amendments, neatest handwriting on the Lost Light, impeccable grammar, basically a supercop, and BUREAUCRACY!

Weaknesses: Very bad at communicating his feelings, even worse at telling jokes. He literally gets sidetracked by bad grammar to the point where Rodimus uses that to his advantage when he wants to get away with something. Issues citations for made up words. Still doesn't think that 'fun' is a real word. Has brother issues and will change the subject at the first opportunity.

Items: The only thing Ultra Magnus would have on him would be his upgraded 'Maximus Ambus' armor which is literally a part of him. That and his Rodimus Star for 'neatest handwriting.'

SAMPLES
Network Sample: Ultra Magnus on the June Test Drive Meme!

Prose/Action Sample: It was like a literal godsend. A ship, seemingly out of nowhere, rescuing them before what seemed to be their final stand. But before Magnus could really understand what was going on, he was separated from the others. He couldn't find Megatron or Rodimus, Ratchet of Drift. Instead, he found himself being handed a contract.

He looked it over thoroughly, pausing to note any grammatical or punctuation errors. He wanted to point them out but...give the dire situation that he was just rescued from, maybe it would be best to keep silent about them. One good turn deserves another, after all.

Once he was done examining the contract and decided that the agreement was suitable, he signed. Once he was admitted onto the ship proper, he began his search. If he was picked up, surely the others were picked up as well. He began his search, hoping that his increased size would be easier to spot. Regardless, he was careful not to step on any of the smaller organics that were busy bustling around his feet.

"Excuse me...if you would, ah...please pardon me..."

He huffed in annoyance. His latest upgrade certainly made moving around difficult. If he could only find a hangar, he could remove his outer armor and continue his search as Minimus Ambus. When he does, he ducks into the hangar as quietly and inconspicuously as a bot of his size can and proceeds to strip away his outer armor. Several minutes later, Minimus Ambus emerges from the hangar, red optics peeled for his friends. Hopefully they made it on board before the battle started. He'd never forgive himself if he discovered he had left them at the hands of the Decepticon Justice Division.
